Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson

Don’t read Winesburg, Ohio if you’re lonely. Don’t read Winesburg, Ohio if you live in a small town. Especially don’t read Winesburg, Ohio if you’re both.
Winesburg Ohio exposes loneliness and small lives in small towns from inside the head out not in a cruel way but not in a kind way either. Anderson knows that people in small towns swear they will leave their small towns but don’t. And he knows that lonely people are lonely in the simplest of activities. The style reminds me of Nightwood gnarled and tortured. “only the few know the sweetness of the twisted apples”
