[This fantasy was inspired by rereading The French Lieutenant’s Woman which combines modern and Victorian sensibilities.]
On the one hand, Trollope wrote mostly about the glossy surface of Victorian society and Fowles wanted to show the less glossy underside and the duality. Trollope knew that dark side was there but wouldn’t have considered it an appropriate topic for fiction and maybe not for discussion either. On the other, Trollope was conscious of himself as a novelist writing a novel and so is Fowles. Trollope would have been amused by the way Fowles includes alternative endings to deceive the reader. In the spirit of both of them, I want them to meet [if only in my head.]
